Four Ideas for a Fairer, Healthier World: IDMP 2026 ePoster Competition Winners Announced

The winners of the IDMP 2026 ePoster Competition were announced on 6 November 2026 at the IDMP 2026 Closing Ceremony, Pusat Kanser Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (PKTAAB), USM Bertam, following the Forum Bicara Santai “Radiasi Dalam Perubatan”. Organised by the Malaysian Association of Medical Physics (MAMP) in collaboration with PKTAAB, USM, the competition was held in conjunction with the International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP) on 7 November and Radiation Awareness Week (Minggu Kesedaran Radiasi) 2026.

This year’s theme, “Advancing Global Health Equity: The Ethical Foundation of Medical Physics”, asked healthcare workers and students to share practical ideas for making healthcare safer, fairer, more accessible and more affordable through medical physics. Unlike a typical research poster, entries did not need experimental results; participants were invited to raise awareness, highlight a challenge or propose a solution. The competition received 14 ePosters across two categories, Healthcare Workers and Students.

Entries were judged on four elements: the idea (the problem it addresses), its impact on fairer, safer and more accessible healthcare, the solution proposed, and the take-home message.

Ideas from the Winning ePosters

Each winning entry tackles a different side of health equity, from the people who deliver care to the patients who receive it.

Radiation Guardians turns lead waste from medical facilities into radiation shields for healthcare workers. The team reports 84% lower radiation exposure for staff and savings of about RM7,000 per shield compared with commercial alternatives, while keeping toxic lead waste out of landfills.

Balanced Minds, Safer Treatments argues that staff sustainability is an ethical prerequisite for modern radiotherapy. Adequate medical physicist staffing and balanced workloads protect both staff well-being and patient safety.

Who Protects the Protectors? focuses on occupational radiation safety and proposes practical Check, Brief and Review steps, so that the people who care for patients are protected fairly and consistently too.

The Missing Piece Isn’t in the Machine proposes “Scan in Common”, a simple Show, Check and Adapt approach that helps every patient understand their imaging examination, whatever their language or ability.

All 14 ePosters

Every entry offered a fresh angle on health equity, from rural maternal care and paediatric MRI to AI ethics, laser medicine and multilingual patient guides. Winning entries are listed first.

Join the Conversation: Advancing Global Health Equity

The 14 ePosters show that health equity in medical physics is not only about machines and budgets. It is also about who is protected, who is heard, and who gets access to safe imaging and cancer treatment. We invite medical physicists, radiographers, clinicians, students and the public to continue the discussion. Some questions to start with:

  1. Access: What is the biggest barrier to fair access to medical imaging and radiotherapy in Malaysia, and what practical step could medical physicists take to reduce it?
  2. Workforce: How should staffing and workload be planned so that physicists can keep patients safe without burning out?
  3. Protecting the protectors: Is occupational radiation safety applied equally across all hospitals, units and job roles? Where are the gaps?
  4. Communication: How can we make sure every patient, whatever their language, age or ability, understands their scan or treatment and feels safe?
  5. Sustainability: What other medical-physics resources or waste could be reused safely to cut costs and protect the environment?
  6. Ethics: When resources are limited, how should medical physicists balance cost, safety and fairness in their day-to-day decisions?
